Domino is a game of skill and strategy in which players place dominoes edge to edge on a line or other surface to form rows or shapes. The term can also refer to the effect of one event causing a sequence of events similar to that of a falling row of dominoes, or to the chain reaction produced by a mechanical device such as a Rube Goldberg machine.

The game can be played by two or more players, with a maximum of four per team. The rules of the game vary by variation but typically each player begins by placing a domino in his or her hand. Once the initial domino has been placed, each player then takes a turn to play a domino from his or her hand. Once all of a player’s dominoes are laid, the players then score points according to the number of pips on each opposing player’s remaining tiles (doubles count as one or two depending on the rules). The first player to reach a set score wins the game.

The word “domino” is most often used to describe a series of events that cause one another in a predictable and usually positive way. In the case of a falling row of dominoes, each subsequent piece is added to the previous ones until the whole structure collapses in a beautiful and rhythmic fashion. This same concept can be applied to a novel’s plot. If your plot has holes, or if you have scenes that don’t seem to advance the storyline in any meaningful way, it may be time to clean up your story.

This can be done by evaluating each scene to see if it has enough momentum to carry the next one. If not, consider reworking that scene to give it more of a “domino” effect.

As you work to strengthen your storyline, don’t forget to take into account the importance of keeping your characters active. If a character spends too much time sitting around, or if you don’t show enough of their personality, the story can start to feel flat.
